“The Atdec solution was able to give us better use of the space we had. Clients have commented on the flexibility of the room, and are happy to know that they can always rely on Sumsound to offer a tailored workstation.” – Brent Heber, Sumsound
Sumsound at Trackdown is a Pro Tools ICON powered mixing theatre run by production specialist Brent Heber in Sydney, Australia.
The Sumsound theatre is Australia’s first media mixing room built around the ICON technology which is increasingly favoured by production studios in Hollywood. The Sumsound studio is aimed at meeting the needs of film and HD television production teams by offering ICON, video satellite and ProTools LE systems all in one place, either as a dry hire rental, or with Brent as engineer.
Sumsound was built as an affordable mixing suite that uses the latest technology to help ease the financial burden for producers, and is designed with workflow efficiency in mind. Production teams rent out this mixing studio for projects to keep within budget and to allow producers and decision makers to work in one place to minimise production time.
Production team members range from sound designers to editors, and need to be able to move the equipment in the room according to their specific job requirements. For example, some producers prefer to have display screens positioned in their direct line of sight, while others find this incredibly distracting, and prefer screens away from sight. Meanwhile, other users require being closer to the projection screen and mixing consoles.
Brent explained, “Sumsound was recently booked by Pete Purcell to premix local film “A Heartbeat Away.” Pete’s preference when mixing is to have PT screens outside his immediate line of sight so they don’t pull him away from the picture and story onscreen. On the other hand, Will Ward was doing sound design for the film and spent many weeks searching SFX databases. The screens needed to be close to him.”
So instead of building different workstations, these needs can be met by positioning equipment in movable mounts, which can then be manipulated to suit each individual’s requirements.
Brent knew about Atdec from his previous company. “I was familiar with the Atdec range of mounting solutions and I knew that it was a name that was reliable, and most importantly, versatile.”
“In order to optimise space, I decided to invest in new 16:9 display panels and mount them on two Atdec Spacedec articulated arms. Clients can then reposition the equipment as necessary.”
Brent used the Atdec Spacedec articulated arms to offer a tailored solution that allowed adjustments to placement so that the screen positions are movable.
“Now my clients and I have a very flexible arrangement, allowing for three primary positions depending on who is using the room for what.”
Atdec’s solutions are designed and manufactured out of the highest quality materials and are vigorously tested to ensure they meet safety requirements. Brent said, “Because the mounts are so strong, guests are invited to position the equipment themselves. They are comfortable with moving the screens back and forth – they know that the arms can hold onto the weight of the panel, even with repeated manipulation.”
“It is also very useful in our industry to have these mounts available in a black finish. Our dark cinema needs to be visually uniform, and our Atdec Spacedec mounts were able to blend into the room and fade into the background.”
“The Atdec solution was able to give us better use of the space we had. Clients have commented on the flexibility of the room, and are happy to know that they can always rely on Sumsound to offer a tailored workstation.”
